2012 Washington DC Auto Show - Fun vs Grumpy

Have you ever been to a show say, at a local carnival or smaller venue where you see a really great performer immersed in a tatty environment. That's kind of how the 2012 Washington, DC Auto Show is. This is not to say the Washington, DC Convention Center (where the show is held) is tatty rather, it's quite grand. It's the grumpy environment one encounters upon entering the show combined with its local and disenchanted vendors that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. The car manufacturers have created visually stunning and immensely entertaining displays but imagine those surrounded by campy stalls and abysmally inadequate food areas.

Disorganization and unfriendliness are certainly not new concepts to the DC area but it becomes more pronounced when you see the polar opposite at the Ford or Toyota areas which have pulled out all the stops to entertain attendees at the show. Imagine the dichotomy when, behind the lackluster food area with no seating, are the super pumped up and entertaining Toyota staff ready to sell you the latest and impressively sported out Sienna mini-van. It just doesn't match. My advice to the DC Show management: next year, outsource to PEOPLE THAT CARE for goodness sake.

Another example: I took my daughter along as the website promised PBS Super Why characters in the children's area all day everyday. When we got there (on a Monday evening), we saw a rather sad looking chicken mascot doing its best to look "cheery". I actually asked it where the Super Why guys were and was directed to a man who said he used the less expensive mascots during the week and Super Why appears only on weekends. Hmm, not a great start.

Yes I know, this is a show about cars not a kiddie fest but guess what, kids love cars too and adding a nice children's play area only adds to the fun. Honestly how expensive could it be to hire the Super Why guys for the whole week? Additionally, the food areas were spartan and you had the usual grumpy DC folks saying that "such and such" is not available even though it's on the menu. Grrr.

Enough about the quibbles, the most important thing to know is that all the car manufacturers have put up great displays and this year, the staff seem extra perky and friendly. We were comically accosted at the Scion area, the Fiat test drive section is a must see and Ford has created a mini nirvana with their display area. Even the usually reserved Land Rover folks let you sit in the new Evoque. In short, the show is a hit so long as you avoid the tacky bits and, God forbid, you should get hungry.

My personal highlights:
1. You must see it to believe it but the Buick Regal GS is STUNNING.
2. Yes, I said Buick.
3. I was able to sit in the new Subaru BRZ and it fits tall people (I'm 6'5").
4. Rather surprisingly, I noted that the Ford Fiesta also fits tall people really well.
5. The fiat Abarth is gorgeous and look for the leather skin-suit clad model in that area. Plus, don't miss the Fiat drive.
6. There is a Lamborghini Reventon on display but it's just sitting there with no one around to explain why it's there. Same with a Ferrari FF. I mean geez, put a model on it or make fliers or something!

Some lows:
1. Fiat 500 steering wheel does not telescope which means I can never own one.
2. Camaro visibility from the inside is rather poor.
3. We have to wait another 6 months for the new Ford Fusion.
4. New Mazda model steering wheels are too thin.
5. Don't even think about driving to the show, all garages are charging "event" parking rates. Come on DC, you need to find a way to get happy, seriously.

Why do we Love Lamborghini?

Perhaps a better question would be, who doesn't love a Lamborghini? Answer: the president of Ferrari but I'm sure even he will admit that the Gallardo is a work of art (by the way, Gallardo is pronounced /guy-ardo/ yes, Akon got it wrong). Lamborghini took it a step further by making the Superleggera (super light) version in 2009 and it looks even more flash in the orange paint job pictured here.

The photo is of a Maisto model in 1:18 scale which, hopefully, fooled you at first glance. It's actually on sale on Ebay if you are interested. For the real thing, check out the photo below of yours truly. Those darn models kept getting in the way of the car!

It is absolutely remarkable what can be done today not just with the initial manufacturing of a vehicle, but also the modifications that can be made after purchasing one. This is not the same as it was just a generation ago. Once upon a time if you wanted a vehicle you checked out the car lot and picked from the models available. For those who could afford it, there were some limited options for getting an automobile that was more specific to your personal tastes, but again this was limited. Now the sky is the limit.

Now you can do nearly anything you want from dramatically modifying the exterior of your Audi to completely seizing control over the internal systems and forcing it to do precisely what you want. The amazing thing about this particular technology is that it is relatively easy to install. The modification of internal systems is achieved by using Audi performance chips. These are computer accessories that are inserted into your on board engine control unit (ECU) and allows you to alter the functionality of a vast array of items. These systems include vital operational components such as the fuel injection, control over the automatic transmission and boost control, and the spark timing which is part of the heart of your engine. The combination of modifying an assortment of these components can result in an incredible enhancement of a variety of aspects.

There are owners who report that utilizing Audi performance chips has enabled them to increase their overall horsepower, the fuel economy of the vehicle, as well as the ability to have much cleaner emissions. The tuning chip has had nearly as long of a life span as the on board computer has. As long as there have been manufacturers and engineers that have worked to better the vehicle with automation and sensors there have been people crafting systems to use this technology to better enhance the vehicle. Although they first really started to see mass appeal in the 1980s, they didn’t become highly used until the 1990s. Above all the legitimacy of using Audi performance chips is not in question. However, the results of these practical tools can vary depending upon how they are used. There have been some reports that in order to get the best results compensating the alterations with a higher octane of gas was needed.

I get enough flack from being an international development worker who spends much of his spare time fixing up old Volvos or cruising car manufacturer "build your own" websites but Carma has even more geeky hobbies, one of which is collecting scale models of, you guessed it, cars.

Worse still, I am a passionate photographer of miniatures and my goal is to make it appear as if the car is indistinguishable from the real thing. What do you think?

Fiat 500 is Important to America

The other day at my local mall, I happened upon these Fiat 500s on display. Sadly, no rep was around to let me sit in one (yes I tried the door but it was locked). What was interesting was the interest in passers by. It's obvious people really love this car and what's even more amazing, is that Chrysler (they partnered with Fiat to bring the 500 to the US) didn't change a thing. There was no re-branding, no "Americanization" of the look. It's basically how it appears in Europe with a couple of upgrades to suit US safety standards. In short, it's brilliant!

Just look how far we've come. You probably could not have sold a car like this in the US ten years ago. A combination of high gas prices combined with a urban dwelling explosion has created a desire for such cars and, in addition, more and more people are viewing their cars as a fashion accessory.

Don't believe me, have you seen the new J Lo commercial with the Fiat 500 cabrio? There are several actually but note the one that advertises a Gucci version of the car. No I am not joking. Yes, some will be rolling their eyes at this but others, most notably the "Sex in the City" types, will be drooling. That's what they call niche marketing and guess what? It works!

For my own tastes, I love the 500 both old and new versions. It's an important car for the US mostly because it's actually selling. The look is hot. It's cute but you can butch it up with larger wheels. And it drives quite nice although the interior is not what one would call spacious compared to another compact like the Honda Jazz.

Regardless, such little quibbles will be far down on the cool list of the fashionistas. And for we car lovers, we too are equally satisfied albeit in different ways. How's that for brilliant marketing?

Evocative new Range Rover is Sex on Wheels

Compact, light weight, sexy and green, the new Range Rover Evoque is pure hotness or rather, coolness. Just look at it, seriously, look at it. What's your first thought - "This thing will never come to the USA because it's far too gorgeous a car and most European manufacturers seem to reserve their prettiest cars for themselves". Think again, I'm pleased to say the Evoque will go on sale September, 2011 in, you guessed it, the United States!

Perhaps the marketers talked with real car people or maybe the high fuel prices had something to do with it but we Americans will actually get to drive this thing. Traffic will be sexified by just merely being in the presence of this compact wonder. From the ovalized, blueish head lamps to the high waisted, pert rear end, the Evoque assumes an aggressive stance. It still looks all Landie yet, a new super fuel-efficient engine combined with all the modern accents will keep the hippies from crying for the environment when you drive by.

You must understand, the Evoque is small. It is only slightly bigger than the Mini Countryman in fact. It should seat five in relative comfort but I doubt tall guys will enjoy the back seats. No matter, the Evoque is about freedom and crossing over and young coupleness. It should appel to those who secretly yearn for a massive Range Rover but fear reprisal from their greeny friends should they actually go out and buy one. Well feel that guilt no longer, Land Rover have just launched their Prius!

Do Volvos Exist in Africa?

Much like the black rhino, Volvos are a rare site in much of Africa. Similar to the uni-horned, much poached creature, you must go to particularly protected places to see one. South Africa, for example, actually has Volvo dealerships but few other countries dare import this rather specialized car. How lucky I was then, to find a rarer still 1992 Volvo 240 estate in Zambia (in white no less).

Don't get me wrong, I am fully aware of this car's connotations. In Sweden, its birth place, it was loved by families craving that ever-culturally imposed obsession with safety in case of a head-on with a moose. In the USA, its image was linked to upper-class soccer moms who overtly flaunted their generous incomes along with the ability to give birth. So what on earth type of image does such a Volvo hold in Southern Africa? According to some Zambians I spoke with, its considered quite ugly but solid.

You see, the trend in Southern Africa these days, should you not be able to afford a new car, is to import a second-hand one from Japan. A car that is worth USD1,500.00 on the Internet can easily be sold for three times that much in countries like Zambia. Remember those old spacey Toyota Rav 4s? They are alive and well here. Ever hear of a Toyota Carina? That's a "nice" car for many in Zambia. Cars that have sleeker appearences are sought after. Safety and reliability are merely after-thoughts for many buyers. As an example, driving through Lusaka, you can often see small children playing around un-belted in the front seat of a new Land Rover. Were there to be a head-on collision, the air bags would cause serious injury. But let's get back to the topic at hand.

In a sense, a false market has been created that is selling over-priced junk. When I first arrived in Zambia, I wanted to get a older Mitsubishi Pajero (my favorite car of all time). However, I quickly became not only shocked but downright insulted as to how much they were asking for, let's face it, not the best car on the planet (USD12,000 for a '97). I had gotten to the point where I was just going to import something myself until I came across an old Volvo.

I know the 240 never won awards for sportiness but I also know it had acheived a stellar reputation for reliability and solidness; two "musts' for owning any car in Africa. Additionally, it was going for a price I felt matched the worth of the car and had been owned and loved by one family its entire lifetime.

It was originally imported as part of a Swedish funded project and my particular model was meant for the Engish market (they use right-hand drives in Zambia). The speedometer is in mph along with the odometer - quaint. The exterior is in remarkable condition and the interior is nearly perfect. There are lots of chunky buttons and the driving position is super comfortable. It needs a bit of work done much like many of we humans need some medical attention here and there due to our increasing ages.

To put it simply, I fell in love. And talk about space, you could put a medium sized black rhino in the back so long as you were able to convince it to hop in . It drives well also and is actually designed to cruise at high speeds for long distances, perfect for a jaunt down to Jo'Burg. It's not so good off road and let's face it, one would not call it a chick magnet but to me, it has a certain charm. To many Zambians, it is extremely un-cool which makes me love it all the more.

2011 Zambia Auto Show

Carma is back after a two week absence. Let's just say Zambian Internet has a way to go. However, you did read the title correctly that there was indeed an auto show in Lusaka, Zambia in Southern Africa this weekend. It took place at the Mulungushi Conference center and consisted of one room with a few car brands plus a few outdoor displays. It was a decent effort but could have been so much more.

Firstly, even though Zambia is a poor country, they know how to put on a show so there was no excuse for the lack of glitz at this year's auto show. There were no sexy models, no unveiling, very few reps and roughly 6 car brands represented. It's doesn't take much to tart up a show but this year, things seem to have been rather tame. What's worse, the entire indoor section was in one room with basically a line of cars against the wall. Granted, I'm spoiled having seen car shows in Asia but honestly, this was lame.

That's not to say however, that the entire thing was a wash out. The Mahindra Motors rep was super friendly and was the only one to invite me to actually sit inside the cars. The outdoor area had some pretty cool classic cars and the local rally team was splitting everyone's eardrums by over-revving their Subaru STI racers. Both Honda and Subaru actually understood the concept and brought several of their models for people to see but, again, sadly no reps to "push" the brand. Weird.

In typical Zambia quirkiness style, there were a few boats on display as well which seemed largely ignored. Still, I shouldn't criticize too much as 1. the show was free 2. I got up close with the new Subbie STI for the first time and 3. the whole scene was surreal as little impala antelope roamed around the grounds between the displays. It was a good effort for the organizers but they need to contact the Zamtel guys to learn how to add some showbiz to the thing.

As if writing rather non-sensical articles about the world of cars, culture and crassness wasn't enough, I couldn't resist the urge to place carmaglobale on Twitter. I have to admit, I've become remarkably obsessed with Twitter since signing up under my author name (marcimpala) last year. Since then, I've enjoyed following a remarkably diverse range of people from our esteemed Secretary of Transportation (in the U.S.) Ray LaHood to F1 ace Jenson Button to one of my favorite singers, Chris Brown. It's enormous fun to flip through tweets and satisfy one's urge for information, whether it be a quote from Stephen Fry or Rihanna sneezing.

Alas, I had to focus and I wanted to tweet specifically on cars thus, the birthing of carmaglobale's Twitter presence in the universe. Additionally, I wanted a place to be even more crass than on my personal Twitter page so now, I feel there are no limits. Prepare yourself.

Finally, a few people have asked about the name carmaglobale so allow me to explain. Carma is my combination of the word car and karma thus, creating a word that refers to any cool, car-related thing. Globale is French for "all encompasing" or "entire" (not global mind you, French for global is mondial). So the meaning can be roughly translated into; "All cool car stuff". Clever eh?

USA is Getting the Ford Kuga (Vertrek) - Why it Matters

If you are reading this in the States you are saying, "the Ford what?" and if you are in Europe you are saying, "Big deal, we've had the Kuga for years". The Ford Kuga, to me, is the perfect "I'm not quite a crossover but still an SUV" SUV. It's got a nice firm agressive stance, decent interior and true road presence. The only near equivalent in the States is the Ford Escape (hideous) or the Mazda CX-7 (not too bad but too roundy). Europe has enjoyed the Kuga for quite some time and, like the new Focus, it will now be one of their "world cars" which means we Americans will not be getting some scary derivative but the actual same car plus or minus a few side indicators.

The new Kuga or Vertrek, as it will be known State-side, was recently unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show. The old model looked great but this new concept is simply stunning. Ford assured us that the final model will be very close to the concept and just look at it; flared wheel arches, super sporty front spoiler and those marvelous slanty headlamps. I can't wait but wait I must as it probably will not hit U.S. shores until 2013. Yes, Europe gets their models first because they are better loved by Ford than we Americans I guess. At least Ford no longer assumes that European styling is too "extreme" for us and thank goodness they moved their tasteless focal groups out of the Midwest (not sure if they really did but it seems so). I'll take a Kuga over an Audi Q5 or BMW X3 any day.

So let's see. The new Ford Focus, Mondeo, Fiesta and now the Kuga are all world cars and available in the USA. Ford is obviously reading my posts because I begged them for this years ago. The general public need not thank me as Ford could argue that common sense, rather than carmaglobale, influened their world car initiative. Either way, Ford is showing us good carma.

The Kuga/Vertrek should be available in base 2WD and most certainly in AWD. I imagine it will be equipped with the rather nifty Ford Sync and continue with its sporty handling albeit, with only slightly tepid off-road capability. It should be the perfect vehicle for a Trader Joe's run with a bit of snow thrown into the mix. I can't wait.

Porsche 911 - Genius or Madness?

If you look at the design of the Porsche 911 starting from the 70's, there really isn't a dramatic change in the overall appearance i.e. 911s of yesteryear look shockingly similar to those of today. So you have to hand it to the Germans, they took a quirky design, kept at it until they managed to make sense out of a rear-mounted engine which really should have progressed to the mid-section (like the Cayman) yet, didn't. Genius I say.

Quite frankly, I hope it never does as moving the engine in a 911 would almost certainly upset the balance of 30 years of engineering, even if it means the looks of the 911 remain, er, unique. Speaking of which, I was not really a fan of the early 2000 911s look-wise but now, with the GTS3 and 2, I find it wonderfully beguiling and, for lack of a better term, pretty.

With that said, I took the liberty of creating my own design online and just look what I came up with. I took the AWD 911 and added the racing body kit plus those perfect rims. As you may know, I enjoy wasting hours of my time on car configurators and the one for Porsche is top notch. I encourage you to have a go as well and if you are buying, then you will revel in seeing both the inside and outside of your final creation in full detail. All you have to do is bring in your specs to a dealer, wait a few months and drive away. You can also apparently arrange to go to the Porsche factory in Zuffenhausen, Germany and personally pick up your car (a bit difficult for we Americans as the drive home would take you through Greenland). All the better I chose the AWD version.

Citroën DS3 - Carmaglobale and Top Gear Magazine's Car of the Year

What is at once cheeky, whimsical, cute, buff and sporty? You guessed it, the new Citroën DS3 - Carmaglobale and Top Gear Magazine's 2010 Car of the Year. The adds call it "anti-retro" and that it is, a bold attempt to make a compact car stand out in an already crowded market (Europe, Asia but decidedly not the US) without relying on the current rejuvenation of all things past. And by golly they've done it.

I've written before about this little beauty, even going so far as to say I'm in love with it. I'm pleased to say my feelings have not changed nay, they've grown stronger, more intense. It's that rejection of going retro that has impressed me. You just know that Citroën could have easily evoked the feelings of the all-but-worshiped 2CV and gained a few sales on sentiment alone. Thank goodness they chose to be original and focus instead on their design language of the future. The result we get is a super modern, super handling, super clever little mini that even guys can drive without ducking behind the wheel. It doesn't hurt that Sebastien Loeb recently macho man-handled this baby in Sweden for the year's first WRC event. It matters little that a few punctures and unfortunate timing caused Loeb to place out of the top three when the WRC version of the DS3 looked that good in the Red Bull livery. Put simply, this car is hot and Top Gear Magazine actually agrees. I believe even Jeremy Clarkson himself is impressed.

Too bad indeed, that the DS3 will most likely never come to the U.S. but that doesn't mean it can't be admired from afar. Better still, we can go on the website and design our own DS3s in order to blissfully waste hours of our life. How cool that they permit saving your configuration for printing and/or sharing by e-mail. This is a nice "Mini-esque" touch and helps place the Citroën out of the hopelessly stodgy, unwaveringly French category. In short, this car is brilliant and is deserving of car of the year award. Perhaps Top Gear Magazine's admiration is slightly more prestigious but we love it all the same here at Carmaglobale.

80's Dodge Van - Coolest Ever

When I was just entering my teens, my parents demonstrated a remarkable moment of coolness and bought this amazing Dodge Custom Van. The outside was flash with chrome rims and a not-too-tacky paint job but it was the inside that caused me to want to sleep in it the first night it was brought home. The interior consisted of plush grey padding, carpeting and, you got it, a Texas shaped center cup holder with the kind afterthought of an ash tray in the panhandle. There was accent lighting in the back and the darn thing even came with a black and white TV which actually worked.

The front cockpit area had one of the thinnest steeting wheels I could ever remember but at least it was maroon in color. There was also a CB radio which was never used unless my brother and I, rather naughtily, tried to get local trucker's attention when our parents weren't around. The back seats folded into a bed and the middle chairs swiveled 180 degrees. The windows had venetian blinds, seriously. It was ahead of its time and came out just before the Caravan craze hit.

This van would be cool even today and I could think of no better vehicle in which to cross America. Ok, maybe I can think of a few and I suppose the cassette player might have to be upgraded and the gas mileage would most likely be abysmal but oh the style. I kind of miss these custom vans. Mini-vans are certainly the norm these days and if you do see a regular van, it usually has some business logo on it or is meant for airport shuttling. I suppose mini-vans are also more aerodynamic and certainly are more advanced but I kind of miss these custom things.

This van was driven extensively throughout Texas and once across the south of the USA. It often had canoes tied to its roof and it's the car in which my brother first learned to drive. I also drove it later in life and I'll never forget it's mega power steering that made it feel remarkably disconnected from the road. It loved to sway also but for the most part, the ride was brilliant. It took awhile to stop however.

I would love to know what happened to this beauty.

Citroën DS3 - I'm in Love

It's not often a car comes along which I immediately like. Rarer still when one comes along that I immediately love. The new Citroën DS3 has managed to break down my stoic, emotional defenses and capture my heart. Put simply, I am in love.

It's the perfect, forbidden love as the Citroën en francais is not available in the US and certainly not in Africa (perhaps with the exception of South Africa). It's like having an immediate and passionate romance with a French girl you once met only to realize, you are probably never going to make an effort to travel to Paris for that "promised" reunion. But I can't help loving this new little car. To me, it's the perfect compact and it even, dare I say it, is on par with the Mini Cooper. It's like a modern mini with Citroën body parts thrown at it, rather like Kristen Scott Thomas 20 years ago. The car immediately strikes me as beautiful.

As if it couldn't get any better, Sebastian Loeb will race the WRC Rally version starting in 2011. I know, it's almost too much. A DS3 and a Rally Mini Cooper, on the same course, at the same time; I may need medication. Like the Mini, the DS3 is highly customizable and even includes a body stripe option. If you go for the top of the line, you will get 150bhp which is more than enough to move this little fella.

The interior is also quite impressive and includes a flat-bottomed steering wheel. I love such wheels because they not only look sporty, but are also nice for we long-legged drivers (gives us just a bit more space down there). Of course, being a European-centric model, it's got a range of diesels but personally, I would take the top line petrol. I don't know what it is with you Europeans and diesels but I'm still leaning toward petrols. Yes, I know diesels are much better for fuel economy but minus the turbo diesels from BMW, they are mostly underwhelming to me.

Anyway, the DS3 has five different engines from which to choose so everyone should be happy. I wouldn't mind seeing Citroën exporting this baby to the US but that's never going to happen. I'll have to settle on working in Europe if I want to fulfill my lust. Dare I call my desire for the DS3 lust? Why do I love compact cars when I am 6'5" (1.89m)? I wish I could answer these questions but then, I would be giving away a part of me that is reserved solely for my DS3 darling.

2011 Dodge Charger - I'll Have the Chrome Pack Please

I've never been one for American muscle cars that is, until around the time the new Ford Mustang appeared on the scene and since then, I've been amazed at the offerings from the big three in the U.S. My favorite is still the new Camaro but just look at this new Dodge Charger. We've already seen the Challenger but frankly, the Charger is more "in your face" in my opinion and seems slightly sleeker without giving up that aggressive, up-right muscular stance. It's haunches are also impressively sculpted giving the car flowing lines without entering non-masculine curvey territory.

Of course, it's all about rear-wheel drive and a Hemi but would we expect anything less? If you're going for muscle, then that's where you want to be. Dodge, in general, is undergoing their own renaissance after having survived an axing during Chrysler's little "re-shuffle". Check out the new Durango coming in 2011, it's absolutely nothing as pokey looking compared to the previous model. Again, it seems bankruptcy was needed to finally push US car manufacturers in the right direction (minus Ford of course). I say, bring on the bankruptcy if it helps create great cars like these.

Mercedes and BMW unite in Brussels

You know an airport is particularly cool when they display real live cars in their terminals. Yes, I know it's blatant advertising but imagine my pleasant surprise when I arrived at Zaventem Airport in Brussels to find an entire terminal full of cleverly lit car displays. It was indeed a shock to the system entering the high tech, brilliantly illuminated Belgian terminal especially as I had just arrived from the ratty-tatty, remarkably under-achieving Jomo Kenyatta Airport in Nairobi, Kenya. I was tempted to make blatantly biased comparisons between the two airports before quickly reminding myself that Kenya has fallen on hard times of late so let me not add salt to the wound.

Back to the cars, the displays were very tastefully done; just as you might see at an auto show. In typical European fashion, many folks simply strode past the displays pretending not to see them until I stopped to take some photos at which point, people felt it was also OK to stop and admire the goods. Oh and there were some nice models on display including a few marks elusive to we Americans such as the Toyota Auris (Europe can keep that one thank you).

I've featured the Mercedes E-Class Coupe and the BMW 5-series diesel which should both be available in the US in 2011. Yes, you read correctly, both models should come state-side. It's not often that our cooler Euro counterparts bless us with their better models but here ya go! The BMW featured its usual array of high-tech and spartan interior. I like the styling but was drawn more to the Mercedes for its sexier appearance and curvy lines. I used to think the new E-Class looked like a souped up Hyundai but the styling has grown on me. It just seems to have more of a road presence, especially considering you don't see that many Mercedes on the roads in Brussels (not counting those proliferate mini A-class things). Beemers, including the 5-series, are everywhere.

I was most pleased that the airport did not lean toward any one model but encouraged a wide variety of manufacturers to display. That's European Union camaraderie at its best. The place really did have the feel of a Paris or Frankfurt auto show. I was most curious to know how they got the cars inside the terminals as I did not see any type of large opening or door in the vicinity. Perhaps they were spawned there but I am guessing.

Look what's coming to America - Fiat 500

I was strolling along the streets of Brussels, Belgium with my Italian buddy the other day and noticed this gorgeous Fiat 500, in Abarth trim no less (that's the sporty kit). He exclaimed, "Ah a cinquecento" (pronounced: chenkwe chento). Of course, Italian car names always sound best when said in Italian. Ask any Italian to pronounce "Ferrari" and you'll see what I mean. It was actually the first time I had seen one in the flesh after nearly a year of admiring it in the virtual world. I can safely say it looks even better in person and the Abarth trim takes it beyond the slightly girly, regular model appearance.

To give you an idea of how customizable this car is, I also saw one in pink with silver wheels. Just go to their website to play with the online car customizer for hours of fun. The best part, of course, is that this beauty is coming to America through Chrysler. They promised not to ruin it by over-Americanizing the look so we Yankees should be in for a treat. It should be available for sale by the end of 2010. Life is dolce!

A Ban on All Cell Phone Use While Driving

The Infrastructurist recently posted an article that cited Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood's desire to ban all use of mobile phone devices in the car, even with hands free technology. I must admit, I felt a little tinge of fear as I adore using Pandora in the car while streaming via Bluetooth (in the US of course). The Secretary has a good point however. According to the Infrastructurist, 16,000 Americans died due to distracted driving accidents between 2001-2007. Luckily, States applying stricter laws against the use of cell phones while driving has apparently helped reduce the number of deaths over the past few years.

I have to agree with Secretary LaHood, distracted driving remains an enormous problem, not just in the US but everywhere. I'm not sure if a total ban on cell phone devices is necessary but certainly the ban against talking on a handset while driving is a must. Bluetooth technology is great but as many geekoids will tell you, few people seem to really know how to use it. Fewer still seem to sync them with their car systems.

When in doubt, pull over to a safe location to make a call (that does not mean on the side of a highway) or ask your co-driver to shuffle the Pandora stations. If alone, set up your play list before heading out and wait until the next Starbucks stop to fiddle with it. It's common sense really. The problem is that so few drivers demonstrate common sense when their phone starts to vibrate madly. There's this weird, innate urge that dictates we MUST answer.

On the bright side, there are some additional tried and true ways to control your in-car phone habit. My wife and I each took the Oprah 'No Phone Zone' pledge a few months ago and I've only broken it twice (both times in Africa on deserted roads). I'm getting much better and it's been 3 months since my last use of a phone in any way while driving in any country. That sounds kind of like an alcoholic's testimony but in a sense, cell phone use while driving is rather addicting. Another way to avoid distracted driving is to finally open up that owner's manual and figure out how to sync your phone via the car's Bluetooth (standard in most new vehicles). That way, you never have to fiddle with your phone if it rings, just push a button on the steering wheel. It's not best way to deal with the issue but it at least keeps your eyes on the road.

Perhaps the best example of how dangerous distracted driving can be was again cited in the Infrastructurist via a New England Journal of Medicine article. It mentioned a doctor who asked readers how they would like to have their appendix removed while the surgeon is talking on his cell phone, even with a hands free. Yep, that about sums it up.

Buick is Hot - Don't Laugh

When you think of Buick, do you still recall images of Tiger Woods, fake side vents and those horrible 'ghost of Harley Earl' commercials? Well I'm happy to tell you that things at General Motors have progressed nicely. Perhaps you have already spotted the new Buick Regal on U.S. roads or the handsome new LaCrosse. Even the Enclave SUV is pretty darn nice (notice I am not mentioning the Lucerne for obvious reasons).

You see, Buick has obviously been listening to my advice because I have been begging for European GM models to be brought to the States for some time now. Need proof? Check out my 'Cars I can Never Own' posting a few years back. In this posting, I commented on the handsome sedan parked outside my British Sister-in-law's London home and bemoaned it's non-existence in America. Guess what? It's now here as the Regal! Yes, the Buick Regal is the GM Europe Opel/Vauxhaull Insignia. I know, it's almost too good to be true.

It's obvious GM read my posting and based their decision to bring the Vauxhaull to the States upon my request. OK maybe there were some other market influencing factors but the bottom line is that we Americans have an extremely handsome sedan on offer from Buick which gives us a great alternative to the boring offerings from Toyota or Honda. And it's even technically, kind of American, sort of.

The Regal is my favorite of the Buick bunch by far. For 26k, you can get a decently loaded model with enough get-up-and-go to compete with any grocery running Camry or Accord. It's got all the high-tech features you would expect from a sedan in that price range but the best thing is that a GS model is planned (pictured) for late 2011/early 2012. The GS will offer more horses (255 to be exact), 20 inch wheels and a sportier appearance yum.

Even Motor Trend's March 2010 issue had "Buick is Back" on its cover featuring a Regal and a LaCrosse so what's next for the nearly dismissed brand, NASCAR? Hey don't laugh.

New Mini Countryman WRC

Lately, Mini Cooper has been on a role. Late last year, they unveiled the gorgeous Mini Cooper Coupe Concept. Shortly after, the Mini Countryman SUV was announced for 2011. Now, they are going to race in 6 World Rally Car (WRC) events in 2011 using the Rally Spec Countryman. If I were head of development for Mini and had an unlimited budget, I could not have chosen a greater path and group of new models for the company.

It's one thing to consistently supply to us the best little car on the planet, but when you decide to enter the WRC, well you are literally killing me with kindness at that point. Just look at this rendering of the car, it's perfect. If you want to see real photos from the Paris Auto Show, then check out Autoblog's high res gallery of the Mini. The car is remarkably butch and presents to us not only a trim compact WRC racer, but a brilliant adaptation of the Countryman that looks like it might actually be capable of winning something.

I've been a fan of the WRC for as long as I can remember and, like many, mourned Subaru and Mitsubishi's withdrawal from the races. I often thought of which car would I personally like to see rally-ized. The Mazda 3 came to mind as well as a return to the WRC of Audi, maybe using the A3. I never really thought of Mini as it was just too good of a thought to even dare pondering. And now, Christmas has come early. I simply cannot wait to see it in competition. And please tell me Mini will offer a derivative of that body kit on the Countryman at some point although, that might push me to ecstatic heights. A guy can only take so much.

Do Not Fear the Used Car

Some of my younger readers may not remember the pre-Internet days when used car shopping meant browsing through the Sunday auto ads in the local paper and a great deal of foot work looking over models in the flesh. We would often go to the car lots on Sunday when most dealers were closed (this was in Texas) and people were allowed to walk through the lots to peruse the inventory. It was hoped we would return on Monday for a test drive. The whole family would go and it was a good time to check out used cars without being harassed by over-zealous sales folks. This was way before "no hassle pricing" became the norm.

If you found a used car you liked, you pretty much had to trust the dealer on whether or not it had been refurbished after being at the bottom of a lake or had received 3 coats of paint to disguise multiple accidents. Luckily in my family, we were always pretty lucky with what we got as my brother would often crash and replace his car before anything went wrong with it and I stuck with my used '85 Honda Civic for a massive 10 years (I was on and off overseas so it saw low miles).

Now, one has only to Google the car of their dreams or go to a dedicated used car website to not only see the car, but check its full Carfax history. We have become such empowered consumers and can arrive at a dealer armed with ridiculous amounts of information. Most dealers know this and have equally embraced the online revolution making it easier than ever to find a decent used car you can trust.

This rather long intro leads me into one of my favorite time-wasting past times. I love to hunt online for cars I am currently craving to see how good of a bargain I can find. Plus, I am currently looking to re-shuffle the family line-up for something bigger to transport multiple kids and provide more space for long trips. I put 20k as my limit and was amazed at the cars I found which ranged from used Land Rover Discoveries to a Volvo XC90. Granted, you have to be willing to buy a car with 50k plus miles on it but if it's been properly maintained, you should be alright.

In fact, the best way to find a used car from a dealer, is to go to their local website and search their used car inventory. You can often get a certified used car this way which adds peace of mind. I would personally never buy from an individual as the hassle of title transfers and dodgy service histories is simply not worth it. Websites such as autotrader or ebay make used car buying much easier and let you customize your search. I recently found a 2007 Volvo XC90 for under 18k and yes, it has AWD, a must for the mid-Atlantic. Of course, I couldn't stop with the Volvo, I also found some amazing used Mini Coopers for under 20k. To me, that's the perfect family combo; an easy to drive Volvo for safe kid transport and a "don't come near daddy's car" Mini to satisfy my need for spirited driving on weekends.

The best part is that once you do find something you like, you simply call the dealer to see if it's still available and then arrange for a test drive without having to wander from lot to lot. After thoroughly researching a car, you pretty much know if it's going to work out or not plus, dealers often mention if a car was owned by a non-smoker which, to me, is a must. Who on earth would want a car reeking of cigarettes? I'll let you know if I go in for the kill and the latest purchase will, of course, appear in my current car list. My my how far we have come.

Porsche in the Family

For anyone who reads my posts (all 12 of you), you may have noted that Porsche is my all-time favorite brand of car and I've wanted one since I was a kid. I pretty much like any Porsche whether it be from the sixties or 2010. Therefore, I'm pleased to say a Porsche has entered the family. Granted, it's not my Porsche but having a brother who owns a Porsche is pretty darn close.

My elder has adopted a 2008 Cayman S with manual transmission and alcantra interior. The car also has the most beautiful wheels I've ever seen on a Porsche. I was not even aware they did anything like that in black. Impressive. I'm most relieved that the car is not red as I simply detest this color on any car except for a Ferrari. Overall, he did a fine job of avoiding the mainstream Boxster or the hideous Cayenne. I dare say, my bro has a touch-o-style, especially by going with the S model which indicates someone is more focused on the drive rather than the image.

I can safely say this is the first Porsche in a Japanese car and Ford pick-up loving family. Perhaps it will help diversify the gene pool and encourage me to place my future sights on another German beauty although, due to my family status, I rather had my eye on an Audi estate. Audi/Porsche, they are one in the same really so that may ever so slightly qualify Porsche ownership much like saying having a Mini Cooper is owning a BMW. That's fair right?

In Your Face Poor - I Have a Dodge Magnum

I spend much of my time in Burundi, Central Africa which is one of the poorest countries on the earth. That doesn't mean everyone in the country is poor as was evidenced from this rather slickly tarted up Dodge Magnum station wagon. Yes those are massive 20 inch rims and low profile tires on a dirt road. The driver has obviously decided to screw subtlety and ensure the poor are painfully aware of just how impoverished they really are.

I must admit, I have a weakness for black American cars with chrome rims and the choice on this Magnum is quite good. And why not flaunt it if you've got it; the less fortunate be damned. In fact, the man's wife should be grateful because this car is so ridiculously out of place amongst Burundi's vehicular masses that he can never, ever hope to annonymously curb crawl.

Why Car Interiors Matter

When I began to re-appreciate American cars following the greatly improved offerings from the big three, I still noticed that the interiors of your average GM or Ford were woefully out of sync with their new, flashy exteriors. Other foreign cars, such as Hondas, Mazdas or Audis to name but a few, seemed to put just as much effort into their interiors as they did on the outside touches. At the end of the day, you spend your time riding in the car and not on top of it so a good comfy interior can make all the difference.

Luckily, American cars have played catch up. Check out the new interiors of Chevy's Equinox or Cadillacs and you will see a huge difference. Ford has also greatly upped their efforts and a recent drive in their Fusion had me exclaiming with joy to many an uninterested ear. Dodge, um, still needs a bit of work. TopGear's Jeremy Clarkson once described the interior of the Avenger (or some Dodge model) as the saddest place he's ever been on earth (or something to that effect).

Nothing beats cool dash lights at night or the perfect seating position. Even Kia is now focusing more of its attention on the interior to where you might almost invite your friends along for a ride. So what's the best interior? That's a tough call of course. I suppose if you want a luxurious interior then a Bentley or a Rolls is top of the list. For a sporty interior, most Ferrari's will do along with any Audi sedan in R trim. My personal favorite? How about the inside of Mercedies C-class AMG? The instant I sat in that car, I was mesmerized and could not imagine the thrill of actually driving the thing every day (I don't, it was at a car show). Plus the seat enveloped me as if I were seating in Oprah's lap.

So indeed, interiors do matter on a car. My little Mazda 3's interior was one of the factors that sold me on the car and I still cannot believe the sportiness of it versus the value. It's one of the best interiors I've ever seen in any car much less an economical compact. But of course, I'm biased. What are the worst interiors you may be wondering? I once sat in a relatively new Jeep and was aghast at its remarkably cheap and dated looking instrument cluster. The Toyota Corolla I drive in Africa is the most hideously, unemotional interior I've seen and I'll never forget driving a 2004 Chevy Impala rental car. The thing had bench seating and a column shifter that reminded me of my mom's old 70's station wagon. Thanks goodness things have improved at GM for the sake of us all.

I was at a county fair in Pennsylvania this past 4th of July weekend and noticed this ignored Suzuki display among a sea of John Deer tractor stands and award winning draft horses.
The new Kizashi (left) reminded me briefly of the Lexus IS-F. It's a sharp car actually with AWD and good performance. I'm smitten.

Ford Fusion - a Rental Car that Doesn't Suck

During a recent trip, I had the good fortune to enjoy a rather surprisingly interesting Ford Fusion. Granted, it was a rental car and a base model to boot but all things considered, it was a fun drive. I dare say, the car didn't suck at all. In fact, I was extremely impressed with the general look of the thing. I had always admired the exterior of the Ford Fusion in a at-least-it's-better-looking-than-the-old-Taurus kind of way. I figured U.S. highways were better off with these things cruising around replacing the embarrassingly ugly Focus.

What surprised me was the interior. Even the base model had an unusually tasteful yet flashy dash display and all of the gadgets and buttons were immersed in a sea of blue at night rather than the de rigeur, American car sickly green. The seating position was perfect for my tall frame and the general handling, while slightly on the rental car floatiness side, was crisp with good steering turn-in.

I felt as though I was in a premium sedan yet, it's rated as a Thrifty Car Rental "standard" car. If you had a higher-end model with leather steering wheel and more gadgets, you would be "stylin". There is also a hybrid version available.

Ford did not win a 2010 high customer satisfaction rating for nothing, they are definitely on the right track with their new models. Not only do they not suck as rentals, but the new Ford cars are actually um, quite good. With the new Taurus now out and the Euro Focus on the way, things are definitely looking up for those who wish to buy (or rent) American.

American Airlines Finally Has New Planes

Oprah's No Phone Zone - Tackles Problem of Texting While Driving

Last year in America, I was nearly wiped out while crossing an intersection by a woman in a car talking on her cell phone. There was a group of us crossing with the "walk sign" in our favor using a crosswalk (yes I do occasionally take public transport). The woman obviously did not see the red light until the last minute and missed our group by mere inches. She eventually stopped half way into the intersection. Needless to say, we had a few cross words for her.

As I now spend much of my year in East Africa, I've noticed the problem of texting and talking on a cell phone while driving is even worse than in the States. In the US, 19 states and the District of Columbia ban the use of a phone while driving and such rules exist in many African countries but you might as well tell them to stop having sex. There is little if no enforcement and, as is the case for Burundi, it's just commonly accepted as something normal.

I've seen too many bizarre accidents to where you know the driver must have been distracted by something to so blatantly hit a pedestrian or another car. I've had to swerve out of the way of oncoming drivers as they were busily chatting away on their phones. It's maddening.

Therefore, I took the "No Phone Zone Pledge" that Oprah Winfrey has set up on her website. You may be a bit shocked that I'm an Oprah fan but I greatly admire all that she has done during her lifetime. Yes, I too can barely watch her TV show between the oppressive commercial breaks and incessant crying of guests but this no-texting-while-driving movement she has created is right on target.

I ask my readers to do the same by following the above link as well as encouraging their friends to follow suit. I even rather forcibly encouraged my wife to take the pledge as I've caught her on several occasions answering my calls from abroad while driving. We've both agreed to put the phone in a place where we cannot reach it while driving. I hope our actions save lives.

New Ford Taurus Police Interceptor

Too often, I've been teased by my European friends about how ancient and outdated our police cars look in the States. In the UK, they buzz around in Range Rovers and sleek Volvos (I know Volvos are Swedish but they still use them for some reason) and in Germany, it's Mercedes, VWs and funky Opels. In the US, you see a bunch of Crown Victorias and Old Fords. That is, until now.

In Maryland, the police are running around in some aggressive looking Dodge Chargers and Ford's newest addition is the Taurus Police Interceptor which, thankfully, replaces the old um, dated model. Just look at it! No more huge clunky trunk or 1970's style nose. This is a cop car that you would stop for even without the flashy lights, piercing siren, and irritable cop yelling at you from the PA. I dare say it even makes me wanna ditch the diplomatic life for a cop career just to drive the darn thing. I would actually encourage high speed pursuits and pull over a Granny doing 37 in a 35 zone just to use the lights.

Ford says the Interceptor has all of the usual upgrades which include beefier suspension, wicked powerful motor, full connectivity for a police computer and those gosh darn cool front push bars to name but a few. The car is apparently much more fuel efficient as well even with an "undisclosed" top speed.

Finally, we have some modern looking black-and-whites and I hope the trend continues. Maybe we'll do a slicked our cop Camero next, wouldn't that be fun?

2010 Australia Grand Prix - Push the Button!

In typical Formula 1 bashing style, the press and critics immediately labeled this year as one of the most boring that will be on record following the Bahrain Grand Prix where, granted, there wasn't much movement on the grid. After today in Australia however, I'm sure those critics are now quiet as it was one of THE most exciting races I have ever seen.

There were crashes, passes, re-passes, controversy and, of course, one of my favorite drivers as the winner; Jenson Button. I was literally screaming at the TV for Lewis Hamilton to pass the Ferarris and for Jenson to "hang on man". I was mentally willing Mark Webber to catch up again for the third time before he finally fell away. I even liked Sebastian Vettel's performance and its unfortunate that he crashed out (brake failure). But nothing beat Jenson Button's self-ordered pit stop to change to slick tires early in the race before the pack and subsequently, sealing the deal - brilliant!

Understandably, Lewis Hamilton was a bit peeved that his crew was not so quick to follow in Jenson's path and, in a rare show of public frustration, let them know it via the race radio. His exact words were, "why didn't you pull me in, that was a terrible idea [to pull him in later]".

Even the under-appreciated Robert Kubica came in second with the Renault team and nearly showed some emotion. However, nothing beats watching Jenson win a race with his screaming on the race radio and kiss from the impossibly hot girlfriend. Is F1 still boring?

Inside an Armoured Car

Things can get a bit tense where I live (Burundi), so our office has a couple of armoured Toyotas that we use when entering sensitive areas of the country or when trying to protect a VIP diplomat or the like.

One car was done by Toyota and the other was a local job. Both are unwieldy beasts that encourage the driver to simply take the risk rather than put up with a 0-60 time close to a minute. Neither car allows for the windows to be rolled down nor do they permit particularly decent visibility. Still, it's kinda of cool knowing that you might actually survive a rocket attack whilst cruising around the countryside in these things.

Oh How I Love a Good 4x4

After driving around in an extremely plasticky, ultra low performance, horrifically un-cool Toyota Corolla estate, I'm as pleased as punch to find myself now in a beefy new Toyota Hilux. Even though it's already been dented, side-swiped and t-boned, not to mentioned used for "beyond spec" haulage, it gets me through any rough road I can throw at it.

These new models have auto locking hubs as well so you just flick the 4x4 lever into high 4 or low 4 and away you go. Quite a far cry from my Pajero days when I would often get soaked or muddy while exiting the car to manually lock the hubs. I also feel, um, quite manly in the Hilux compared to cruising around in the Corolla. The best bit is the noise of that raucous V-6 and did I mention the torque? Stunning!

Yes, I know I just wrote about the poor quality of Toyotas and yes, the Corolla is part of the bad bunch but the Hilux is that rare exception...make more like this please.

Toyotas Have Sucked for Quite Some Time Actually

The recent spate of recalls from Toyota due to a dangerously sticky accelarator pedal hasn't surprised me really. I've been noticing a decline in the quality of their vehicles for quite some time now. I take the example of my '98 Toyota Camry, a car that had Japanese technology but which was actually manufactured in Alabama.

It was a nice enough car but suffered from faulty strut mounts. The first time they became worn, I replaced them but less than a year later, they became worn again and were covered under warranty. It was obvious there was a fault as I had read similar complaints on Camry forums. I even wrote the company pleading for them to consider a recall but by then, the model had quietly phased into the background in favor of the new fancy 2000 Camry.

Since then, I've noticed that most Toyota models have been quite lackluster compared to other cars yet, they maintained that solid repuation as being ultra reliable. True, I think the engines are quite impressive if underperforming. But take the example of the brand spanking new Corolla that I'm driving now. To be kind, it's a piece of junk. The interior is plastic hell, the engine is remarkably asthmatic and the supension will make you sea sick.

Granted, it's a Corolla, not exactly one of Toyota's more emotional models but compare it to the same type of entry model Honda or Mazda or even the new Hyundais (yes I said Hyundai). Those cars are far more exciting to be in and offer punchy, trim engines and a decent driving experience, nothing like you would find in any lower end Toyota.

Now, there are exceptions, the Toyota Hilux (Tacoma) is one of the greatest cars of all time. The Land Cruiser is legend and Lexus (Toyota's luxury division) makes some stunning cars (IS-F). But Toyota needs to extend that same standard to all of its models and step up their game. I believe there is an old saying, "It takes years to build up a good reputation but only a day to ruin it".

New Mini Countryman

I've been eyeing the Mini SUV concepts for quite some time now and just knew the finished product was going to be great. The newly unveiled Countryman doesn't disappoint. In fact, it's actually less cutesy Mini and more butchy SUV if you ask me.

This little baby will be launched in the US in 2011 with a choice of two engines but the UK gets to browse five little motors with a diesel option of course. Hey, I'll take the two choices thanks but would definitely go for the larger version which powers the 4-wheel drive (there is a choice of 2 or 4 wheel drive).

I'll leave the techy bits to MotorTrend as I would much rather focus on that gorgeous body. It's got Beyonce beefy haunches with a Scarlett Johansson sensual face (had to add some bit of crassness). The best bit is that it wouldn't attract snickers from hardcore SUV enthusiasts but rather, a second glance and perhaps a shrug of respect. You see, the Countryman has more of an aggressive stance compared to the charming, if not feminine, presence of a base Mini Cooper.

Of course, it will be customizable ad naseum and that's what makes Minis amazing. In short...I want!

Nice Car oh Wait - It's Chinese

We were zipping along through the Central African countryside these past few days with this nice black, mid-size SUV blazing a path for us. For once in my long, car-loving life, I could not recognize the make or model. From the rear, it looked like a jacked up Honda CRV and from the side, a Mitsubishi. Finally, as I was able to catch up with it and snap a photo, I recoiled in horror as I realized the car was Chinese.

Granted, it's a pretty car but as usual, this black beast represented China's best efforts at copying others. This is not the first time I've ranted on this topic but I'm getting more and more irritated at these cars squeezing there way into markets where regulation is a suggestion at best. This car is from Great Wall Motors and I've had the unfortunate pleasure to see them displayed at some Asian car shows. Keep in mind, all Chinese cars are banned from Europe, not due to trade restriction but for safety. The same applies in the US.

Granted again, the cars look ok but I would never put my family in them based on many public crash test results which exposed their design flaws. I know I know, China will eventually make a decent car that can be sold world wide but at what cost? The obvious disregard for human safety, not only in the car industry, but from many products coming out of China is staggeringly disturbing. Listen China, study the industry, don't copy it. Spend a bit more and put safety into your products, your people will thank you for it. For those that import these sub-par machines, same applies to you buddy!

3,000 Mile Road Trip

I recently completed a Christmas road trip that took me through 8 states in the span of 9 days. I put more than 3,000 miles on my little Mazda 3 and re-established an enormous appreciation of the United States in the process. Nothing can beat the smooth open highways of Virginia or Tennessee's rolling hillsides. We started in Maryland and went all the way to Texas with a detour through Kentucky and West Virginia on the way back. The best part of any road trip however, is the people you meet along the way.

I recall dining at an Arkansas Cracker Barrel restaurant and dealing with a ridiculously friendly waitress who more than earned her tip. Later that night, we were forced to abandon the highway due to severe rain and an upcoming ice storm. I knew this, not only from my Android smart phone weather channel app, but from a friendly, coffee-sipping state trooper at a road-side stop who warned a couple of us drivers that the Interstate was closed about 100 miles south.

At the same stop, I chatted with a fella who claimed to have driven an '85 Chevrolet pick-up from New York without stopping for sleep. He was heading to Las Vegas and planned to push through the bad weather. My little compact Mazda seemed terribly urban compared to his ride and to the massive trucks that took up the majority of the parking lot yet, I knew I was probably more comfortable inside with my mp3 player and telescopic steering.

Further into Texas, you simply cannot help but greet everyone you see and discuss your travels with other fellow voyagers such is the nature of my home state. Texas is just friendly and that's how we are and we genuinely want to know how "yer doin". An older couple just couldn't get over how cute our daughter was and we all remarked upon the hideously cold weather in Texarkana.

This was the first long road trip on which I used a GPS. I was simply blown away at how easy it was to find the next gas station or fulfill a Starbuck's craving by simply searching for the next establishment via the push of a few buttons. I felt super high tech yet, recalled the days when I did the same thing with a simple atlas. Now, I had the GPS plus my Android phone so not only did I know exactly where I was at all times, I also knew the weather and the fact that Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky...cool.

The most pleasant surprise was adding two new states to my repertoire; Kentucky and West Virginia. Both turned out to be beautiful and nothing beat the sensation of cruising through West Virginia at night in extreme fog and rain. As scary as it was, I was in a state of bliss testing the Mazda's fog lights, defroster and ultra efficient wipers (aftermarket).

My family was with me as well and they took the whole trip in stride. I was extremely grateful to NOT have been anywhere near an airport as the weather was causing massive delays throughout the country. When you are driving, you simply need to pull off the road if things get bad. I'm telling you, put me in a car any day compared with the hassles of flying. If only there was a decent way to drive to Africa.

An airplane moves me get it? Ok, perhaps that joke is overdone but I do enjoy being around planes these days although, I do not enjoy being inside them. No, this is not a "special English" section for English-as-a-second-language learners on prepositions, but a genuine idiosyncrasy of mine.

You see, I used to love flying but no longer. It's just rather tedious these days and often frightening (when you fly a lot in Africa as I do). I greatly admire how miles of rivets and aluminum can somehow ascend into the clouds but when you think intently on it, it's unsettling. I do, however, love watching plans take off and land. Nothing can match the pure noise and muscle of a huge jet wibbly wobbling on its final descent. Often though, I prefer to be on the outside.

What's wrong with the inside you may ask? Nothing if you have an awesome seat in business class or the "economy plus" seat I enjoyed this morning on KLM. But flight attendants are disgruntled, service is becoming sparse and good Lordy, what's happening with British Air?

Chinese Auto Makers are Copycats

I'm so tired of opening the pages of foreign newspapers and magazines only to be greeted with China's latest Mini Cooper rip-off or BMW look-alike. Even when I am in Central Africa, I see brands such as Great Wall Motors with their blatant RAV4 looking machine or embarrassingly similar Honda'esque sedan. Come on China, let's get real.

Are you telling me Chinese motor companies do not have access to creative minds? Is there not a single engineer who can come up with his/her own design? Is China incapable of launching a truly original brand? This copycatting extends to many other products as well. Most famously, there is a Chinese i-phone that is widely available in this region and tons of other marks that insinuate they are made in Japan.

Take my hotpot for instance, it's brand name is called Nikai Japan. Sounds uber Japanese doesn't it? Promises quality doesn't it? In reality, Nikai Japan is an Indian owned company which manufacturs all of its products in, you guessed it, China.

Of course, many companies manufacture in China but they, at least, come up with their own designs. If you saw the opening of the Beijing Olympics, you know that China is oozing with creativity and originality. Are you telling me this talent cannot be extended to their car industry?

So come on China, stop copying other car makers. Dig deep into your cultural traditions and come up with something on your own. I know you can do it.

New Bugatti Galibier

When I first set eyes upon the new Bugatti Galibier, I thought it was kind of ugly. However, upon fourth and fifth glances, I became entranced with its shape and beguiled by its stance. This new Bugatti is aimed squarely at well-to-do dads in search of a bit of extra boot space...haha, just kidding. The Galibier is an uber fast limo sans chauffeur.

Only around 15 are being made and will be sold mostly to existing Bugatti owners. It is estimated that the car will reach 200plus MPH, not quite as high as its Veyron brother but geez who cares. It still has the same V-10 engine but with marginally less power oh darn.

The Galibier rides on massive 22-inch rims and has a unique two-tone paint job that can apparently be lit, like as in night-light lit, via some high tech paint job. I can't wait to see that in action. Not that I'll ever see this car in person (especially here in Burundi) but one never knows.

The interior boasts one solid piece of wood for the dash and a center-mounted clock that can be removed and worn as a time piece. I think more car bits should be removable and worn quite frankly, so good idea on that one. I have yet to read about anyone driving the car, but I'm sure it's plush without being to limo'esque and most certainly is faster than a cheetah on Red Bull.

I admire how Audi/VW continue to make Bugattis even though they really do not make economical sense. Bugatti is a car-lover's brand and may it live long and prosper.

I was sitting in a CVS parking lot and immediately noticed this lovely dark blue little baby (the car not the woman). This model is one of my all-time favorites and I find the lines, curves and facia pure Porsche brilliance.

African Truckers

When I was but a wee lad, I used to scare the hell out of my mom by remarking constantly on my desire to be a truck driver (in the USA). I was obsessed with big rigs and wanted to live the life of BJ from the TV series 'BJ and the Bear' (look it up). My mom was sure the phase would pass but my desire for this profession lingered for quite awhile until I was eventually distracted by other metiers.

She did not necessarily mind the fact that I wanted to be a truck driver it's just that, like many parents, she knew my talents were best served elsewhere. I eventually landed in international relations which is a natural fit for me. However, my truck driver-envy continues. I realize that in the states, the profession can be grueling and with today's high fuel prices, many independent truckers have gone out of business.

Life on the road is tough and I've met several ex-truckers who are happy to have moved on to other careers. Truckers in Europe have it the worst with all of those limiters on the engine, border crossings, itty bitty tiny roads and language barriers. Truckers in Africa are, quite simply, a different breed.

In the Great Lakes region where I currently live, a trucker entering from Uganda into Burundi has to put up with massively corrupt police, road bandits and a general lack of any decent maintenance facility. The country does have, ironically, a 'truck station' in the capitol city where truckers can safely park their rigs for the night and have access to clean facilities (and prostitutes).

The guy in this photo is from Uganda and he enthusiastically showed me his Mercedes rig. He was dropping a large load at a local warehouse near to where I work and told me of his trip in Bujumbura. He said, for the most part, things are much better now post-crisis but the biggest hassle is the police who will demand a large bribe if so much as a blinker light is out. Still, he said he enjoys life on the road and the independence it brings.

I envy him. His truck looks gorgeous and driving through Africa can, during the good times, be a magical experience. During the bad times, it's about as awful as you can imagine. Truckers have their own share of um, issues as well. You can plot higher HIV/AIDS rates along major trucking routes and being on the road constantly, it is only a matter of time before you have an accident with some out of control mini-bus. Regardless, I wouldn't mind giving it a go. If I were to try it, I think the USA is the obvious starting point. I'll take a massive Peterbuilt super-cab please.

Toyota Corollas are Dead Dull

One of the first things I noticed about Central and Southern Africa was the prominence of the Toyota Corolla. They are everywhere and I mean everywhere in every state of repair. They often act as a taxi and have even replaced the once charming presence of London cabs in Nairobi. Instead of exiting the airport to surreal scenes of thorn trees and cabbies, you are now greeted with tastelessly modified...you guessed it, Corollas.

Granted, it's a reliable car and the new models are quite sharp. You can even pretend you are driving a sports car if you go for the body kit offered in most countries but in reality, you are driving an econo-box. So my office car here is, naturally, a Corolla.

I'm not complaining though as the ole phrase, 'beggars can't be choosers' reminds me of how lucky I am to have a car at all here (Burundi). Still, the Corolla I drive has perhaps the most lackluster engine I have ever experienced. It's the extreme base model which means plastic wheel covers, no frills interior and itty bitty engine under 100bhp.

Perhaps its redeeming factor is the fact that it's an estate (station wagon) model which we don't have in the States. It's not a bad looking machine at all and remains perfect for zipping around the tiny city of Bujumbura. The suspension is suffering from one too many pot-hole hits and it corners with all the grace of an ox cart but again, I'm grateful to have any wheels at all here and it saves me from having to search from something myself which, in these parts, can be quite a challenge.

If I COULD choose something, it would be the new Toyota Land Cruiser Wagon which is really cool looking in a Safari kind of way. But for now, I'll just be happy with my little wagon, even if the steering wheel is parked in my crotch.

I've always loved the Toyota Hilux (Tacoma) even though I don't really fit well in it. The steering wheel always jams into my knees nevertheless, it's a cool little truck. It was the first car my wife ever drove when she was still living in Zambia and she lent it to me now and then before the darn thing was eventually stolen at gunpoint (no one was hurt).

So I was pleased to see this lovely little gem the other day parked outside the central bank. Notice the tastefully added brush bars. Tasteful mods are rare in this part of the world. However, Bujumbura is starting to surprise me with it's variety. I've already seen a couple of BMW X5s, An Infiniti and two Subaru Foresters...wonder where they get spare parts!

Formula 1 in Singapore - Nothing Better

In case you might have happened upon my other blog, you may have noticed that I have a near obsession with the city-state of Singapore. If you follow carma, then you know I am also a die hard fan of F1. So imagine combining the two in one go. It's enough to send me into spasmodic fits of ectstasy and thank God almighty that I have just installed a satellite in my new Bujumbura home so that I can actually watch the race live.

The Singapore circuit is unrelenting and, of course, now infamous for Piquet's faux-crash allowing Alonso to place higher. Regardless, the course is a work of art but with little room for passing. Therefore, qualifying is key and after yesterday's practice session, I'm a little worried about my man Hamilton (yes and Button too) but you never know.

So what's the best part? The Singapore Grand Prix is at night. So post-race, you can hit the town for some Singaporean revelry or go for the most exotic, luxurious (and expensive) Asian meal your mind can envision. I can barely contain myself!

I wish I could offer a prize to the person who can identify this car (pictured left) but perhaps online recognition will suffice. I think it's a Daihatsu something but not sure. It's kind of a cute design but not sure if it is a newer model made in a developing country or a much older model, refurbished for African roads...quite a mystery indeed.

A Rav 4 Like You've Never Seen Before

Just look at this hot little thang. Have you ever seen such a tastefully modified Toyota Rav 4? It even looks slightly masculine. The story behind this one is quite interesting. It is owned by my new landlord and she bought it via her sister who is based in Dubai. It was owned by one of the members of the royal family who, apparently, sold it after only owning it a few months. In Dubai, they go through cars like a French teenager goes through cigarettes.

I believe the model dates from around 2002 or 2003, just before the new models came out. I've attached a pic of the newer model from a Rav 4 in Kenya for comparison purposes. The older model, modified, looks loads better although, you can get a kickin body kit on the new one so long as it comes from Japan. Why oh why are such options not available in the US? I believe Toyota wants us to continue to drive the most boring models while the rest of the world enjoys top notch mods. Unfair to say the least.

Range Rovers in Burundi

I know what you are thinking, "Now where exactly is Burundi". Just to help you out, it's due south of Rwanda and just West of Tanzania...feel better now? Ok, how about something more important; Land Rovers!

Yes, just look at this beauty I spotted today right here in Bujumbura. Let me tell you, this Rangey sticks out like a soar thumb because if a Burundian is lucky enough to have a car at all, it's usually some clapped out Toyota mini-sedan with fogged-over lights and a cracked windshield.

Having a Range Rover here means that you are either a master at stealing from the poor or the successful recipient of a South African business buy out.

Motocycle Crashes are Never Fun

Whether or not the driving in South Central Africa is, um, challenging, it will never compare to the carnage of Jakarta, Indonesia or the grid-lock of Bangkok. Still, I have already seen quite a few bad accidents here in Burundi and one or two in Kenya.

The ones that seem to suffer the most are the motorcyclists. Of course, if you spend a good part of your morning weaving in and out of cars and treating yourself to a game of chicken with a Land Rover, then eventually, your guardian angels are gonna give up on you.

Such was my morning a few days ago when we were broad-side by a motor-cycle taxi. Our driver even duly signaled for his left turn but the motorbike slammed into us with enough force to send the two passengers flying. Fortunately no one was hurt but nothing is worse than hearing flesh on metal. Thank goodness the bad roads here do not allow for high speeds.

When you Cannot Drive

As I've only been in Burundi less than 2 weeks, the chance to drive has not yet presented itself. They (Burundi Police) are quite strict concerning licenses here so I had to go to the local police station to apply and apparently, there is ONE person in the entire city of Bujumbura who issues licenses. I have an estimated 2 weeks to go until, if I am lucky, my license will be ready.

In Indonesia, I walked in and out of the DMV with a license in a few hours. In the US, you get it, along with your registration plates, in under an hour usually. But in Burundi, you must be patient. So in the meantime, I rely on drivers and just plain 'ole hoofing it.

Luckily, the beaches here are beautiful so a stroll along the water's edge is refreshing so long as you keep a good eye out for crocs. It's also nice to be a passenger sometimes but the way driver's get so close to pedestrians here unnerves me a bit. There is no such thing as "you must stop for all pedestrians" like we have in DC.

Don't get me wrong, I cannot wait to get behind the wheel again but instead of gripping a nice, thick leathery thing, I will most likely have to settle for a worn out, plastic something from Toyota.

Once I get rolling on my own, I'll do some videos, of course, like my Indonesian ones.

New Mini Cooper Coupe Concept- Really?

My God have you seen it? Was I hiding in the hills these past few months because I did not realize Mini had a coupe concept on the table. Yes yes, I knew about the little SUV but this coupe is simply gorgeous!

Most of you know I am a shameless Mini lover so you can imagine my state of ecstasy when I saw this little number pictured left. It's, of course, sporty but keeps that inherent Mini quirkiness in its design which is perfectly executed if you ask me. Don't worry, I am not quite of the school which thinks "Mini can do no wrong" however, they nailed this design hands down.

According to Car Magazine UK, Mini plans to go ahead with this car so let's keep our fingers crossed; Lordy Mercy.

African 4x4s

I've been in Nairobi, Kenya this past week and I had forgotten how cool the 4x4s look there. If there is one king daddy amongst these rolling, locked diff machines, it's the Land Rover Defender. When properly kitted out like the one in this picture, the thing becomes downright menacing. Just look at those extra lights, stepping pads and unexplainable wires connecting the roof rack with the hood. I love it!

I do not love the traffic in Nairobi however and some of my aquaintances said the congestion and unpredictable security situation is worsening. Still, what other city in the world offers you top notch carnivorous treats within a forty minutes drive from a game reserve?

The price for all this?...being huddled behind huge electric fences ringed with barbed wire...fun.

Lewis Wins and Massa Crashes - What a Weekend

Formula 1 was turned on its head this week not simply from Team BMW's withdrawal, but from Felipe Massa's accident and Lewis Hamilton's first win of the season. I've always loved Lewis and was rooting for him all season. It was especially hard to see him suffer from a lackluster McLaren-Mercedes car. Therefore, when he pulled off the victory at Hungary this past weekend, I was thrilled.

Unfortunately, Felipe Massa suffered a horrific injury during qualifying which has put him in hospital up to now and he only just came out of an induced coma (errant spring from Reubens car hit him in the helmet). The good news is that he is talking and alert and it seems there is no permanent injury to his eye. I have always loved how calm and cool Felipe is and his victory last year in Brazil was awe-inspiring. I hope he comes back into the sport in 2010 (seems Schumacher will fill his seat in the meantime um...great). So speedy recovery dear Massa.

Now back to Lewis, well done matey! I knew you would get there this year; I just knew it. Yes, I still love Button but, as I have noted in previous posts, I have not forgotten you dear Lewis. My only complaint; your Twitter page needs permission and I have yet to get approved so no Tweets thus far. Perhaps I need a special "in" so maybe carma will help (hint hint).

So what a weekend (and week) it has been in F1. I don't know if I can survive the almost one month gap until the next race in Spain.

Nissan got Cubed

I always admired the new Nissan Cube for its innovation and funky looks but I did not realize it could look sporty as well. I saw this little white sample on the road the other day and it was sporting a ground effect body kit...who'd a thunk it? There was a smartly dressed woman at the wheel and she seemed rather flattered when I whipped out my cell phone to photograph her little rolling cubicle.

Nissan has had an impressive couple of years; at one end of the spectrum, we have the remarkable GT-R (Skyline) and at the other, the clever little Cube shamelessly being promoted as having been designed based on a bulldog wearing sunglasses (no joke). Who ever said the Japanese were dull? Where is Toyota in all this. Ok, yes, we have Scion but where are the fun Toyotas?

Anyway, well done Nissan, I used to describe your cars as invisible but now, they truly have character and Infinity is looking better and better. Keep it going.

2010 Porsche Cayman S has a Pretty Bottom

Since I was a wee lad, I've always loved Porsche. The 1970's 911 is still a car I would like to have and that iconic shape really hasn't changed much. Along comes the Cayman and suddenly, the Porsche I love has sinewy curves and a pretty Italian-looking rump. The Cayman offered me a sweeter alternative to the Boxster and something more affordable than the 911 Turbo plus, all-wheel-drive and a mid-engine set up.

Yes, a mid-engine set up in a Porsche for under $50k...fun. I want. Plus, the 2009 version is sleeker and sports those ever-present rear LEDs which, I must admit, are pretty cool and should last longer than most of our lifetimes. Indeed, it is the rear of the Cayman that most attracts me similar to Beyonce or the entire US women's Olympic swim team. It is bulbous, pert, muscular and sexy. Most other Porsche models do not offer such a wide bottom. I am thus hopelessly drawn to this most sensual, four-wheeled, German goddess.

Following many car reviews and even a rather large plug from UK's Top Gear, most would agree the Cayman is the best overall driving Porsche. It even has telescopic steering for we tall guys so yes, this is a Porsche for the not-quite-at-the-track-every-weekend-but-way-beyond-the-average-daily-driver sort of enthusiast. And yes, it's also darned pretty.

Crazy Funky Mini Bus Taxi

We were on a tour around the historic sites of Phonsavan northern Laos and were lucky to have this sweetly modified mini-bus at our disposal. Notice the extreme tinting of the front window. The driver can kiss his peripheral vision goodbye.

Phonsavan, Laos is known, interestingly enough, for the Plain of Jars and unexploded US bombs. The Plain of Jars contains ancient burial tombs and the bombs are courtesy of the US bombing raids during the Vietnam war or the "American War" as it is known locally.

Share Your Love of Cars with Your Family

My daughter recently and excitedly exclaimed, "Is that a Camaro?" She had seen a Chevrolet symbol and had remarkably tied it to my recent excitement of seeing a 2010 Camaro for the first time in the flesh.

I kept looking at it and saying, "Look look, it's the new Camaro wow!" She obviously connected it to something rather grand and now, whenever she sees any Chevrolet, she asks whether it is a Camaro much to the chagrin of my wife.

Still, it's kind of cool that she is already into naming cars. She also asks the names of other cars on the road and seems to especially like white ones. She also likes it when I make my car nice and sparkly especially the wheel shine I apply quite liberally following a wash. Perhaps she will take what she has observed and become a car fan in her own right; one can only hope.

So take the time to share your love with your kids. In general , children are fascinated by vehicles of all types so it becomes that much better when the parents are into it as well.

Toyota Prius - Still Boring

A few weeks back, I wrote an article for examiner.com on why the Toyota Prius was such a "bore". I indirectly accused its drivers of being falsely green and wannabe trend setters. What surprised me was the amount of commentary I received; both pro and anti Prius.

One reader said that because I thought the Prius was dull, I must be a "latent homosexual". Um, yes I can see the link there. Another agreed with me and said their experience driving one was so bad, they traded it in after only a few months. Several others accused me of having never driven a Prius (I have, it's awful).

At least the Prius is a car that ignites passion which is quite ironic as the car itself is completely "passionless". Still, the Prius is not all bad. It's actually quite nifty inside as well as roomy. The new model (pictured here) doesn't look too "I drive a stupid looking car because I am saving the world" goofy. And you have to hand it to Toyota that they have successfully mass-marketed a hybrid despite it being a money-loser.

In fact, my neighbor drives one and I've never seen him wear clothing made of hemp. But if you are going to put a "coexist" and "Obama 08" sticker on a Prius, well, you are begging to be teased.

So thank you to those who commented on my Examiner article and yes, I still believe this car is an enviro-weenie nightmare. Therefore, Prius owners can continue to eat my near-zero emissions Mazda 3 exhaust!
